  • Why don’t you mention grain servings with meal planning? Isn’t that part of a balanced meal to include healthy whole grains versus just protein and vegetables? Also, calcium rich choice such as milk/yogurt/dairy. In the states we have the my plate model that is part of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines. I am liking how you are teaching the method of stocking pantry, fridge well enough that you can create meals based on what you have! Great ideas, Thx, Theresa

      Great question!

      TO be honest I’m not in agreement with the US Dietary Guidelines, after reading Marion Nestle’s book food politics and understanding what goes into creating such ‘guidelines’. But this class isn’t about debating nutrition politics. So I’ll get off the soap box.

      For me, whole grains aren’t important for a balanced diet. I’m much happier getting my carbohydrates and all the other micro nutrients from legumes and vegetables. But if you’d like to include grains, substitute them for some of the vegetables in your plan.

      And for dairy just include them in your protein allowances. Or breakfasts & lunches.
